What is Erate

Overseen by FCC, administrated by Schools and Libraries Division (SLD) of the Universal Service Administration Company (USAC), E-Rate has been performing monetary distribution since 1998. In 1996 it was formally established by the Telecommunication Act (of 1996). The purpose of establishing E-Rate was to support schools and libraries in acquiring Telecommunication and internet services—telecommunication, internet access, internal connections, and maintenance services—by providing discount on such services. Ranging from 20% (no free or reduced lunch for students) to 90% (over 75% of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch) the discount amount depends on the population served by the school/library as well the poverty factor.
